In October 2020, The Junior League of Tyler developed a new community initiative known as the “JLT Care Closet.” Initially partnering with Tyler ISD, the JLT Care Closet was created to provide middle school students in need with access to basic hygiene products.
The JLT Care Closet committee regularly collects products such as sanitary napkins, soap, shampoo, deodorant, dental care items, hairbrushes, children’s underwear and socks, etc., to create hygiene kits.
These kits are delivered to campuses, where students have discreet access to them via the school nurse’s office. School nurses have the ability to easily request items to be restocked throughout the school year based on student need.
During the 2020-2021 school year over 1300 kits were distributed to local students. Since 2020, Care Closet has evolved to routinely providing personal and feminine hygiene products to 28 Tyler ISD campuses and 38 other Smith County school and charter campuses, including Arp ISD, Bullard ISD, Chapel Hill ISD, Lindale ISD, Troup ISD, Whitehouse ISD, Winona ISD, Promise Academy, Tyler Classical Academy, and Cumberland Academy. Some school districts even have their own central supply closets, donated and stocked by The Junior League of Tyler.
